Reports to: Operations and Project Manager Company: Murray’s Landscape Services Limited Type: Seasonal / Full-Time Reports to: Operations Manager and Project Manager About the Role Murray’s is seeking an experienced and organized Landscape Crew Leader to manage on-site operations and lead a team of labourers. As a Crew Leader, you are the bridge between the design/management team and the field. You will be responsible for executing high-quality landscape construction projects, ensuring site safety, managing materials and equipment, and mentoring your crew to work efficiently and effectively. Key Responsibilities 1. Project Management & Leadership • Site Execution: Lead the crew in performing all aspects of landscape construction, including site excavation, grading, and the installation of soil, sod, plants, mulch, pavers, retaining walls and landscape lighting. • Crew Management: Direct the daily workflow of the crew onsite, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and to the company’s quality standards. • Coordination: Work with other crews and trades to assist with complex installations (carpentry, electrical, plumbing) as required. • Quality Control: Ensure the job site is clean and organized daily. Arrange for final site inspections with the Project Manager / Supervisor prior to job completion. 2. Estimating & Logistics • Planning: Perform initial site visits to assess conditions. Interpret landscape plans and blueprints to determine layout and grades. • Estimating: Assist in calculating required materials (volumes of soil, gravel, etc.), labour hours, and equipment needs based on field measurements and plans. • Materials: Coordinate the ordering and staging of materials with Project Manager / Supervisors. Ensure excess materials are returned to inventory or suppliers upon completion. 3. Equipment Operation • Heavy Equipment: Proficiently operate skid steers (Bobcat), mini-excavators, tractors, and forklifts. • Small Equipment: Operate and maintain small engine equipment (mechanical wheelbarrow, tamper, chainsaws & cutoff saws). • Transport: Safely load, unload, and transport equipment and materials using a truck and flatbed trailer. 4. Safety & Administration • Safety Compliance: Conduct Pre-Job Hazard Assessments and ensure the company Safety Program is followed strictly (OH&S, COR Safety Program). • Reporting: Complete Daily Worksheets documenting equipment, labour and materials used. • Client Relations: Serve as the primary point of contact for the customer on-site, communicating concerns professionally to the Supervisors. Qualifications & Education • Experience: 3 to 5 years of relevant landscape construction experience is required. • Leadership: Previous experience running and managing a crew is highly preferred. • Education: Minimum completion of High School (or equivalent). Knowledge and application of the Canadian Landscape Standard. • Licensing: Valid Driver’s License is required (clean abstract preferred). • Certification: Red Seal Landscape Horticulturists (preferred but not required) Skills & Competencies • Technical Skills: Ability to interpret landscape plans and execute complex grading and hardscape installations. • Math & Estimating: Ability to calculate volumes, areas, and material quantities accurately. • Horticulture: Knowledge of plants commonly used in Newfoundland landscaping, including fertilizer and soil requirements. • Communication: Excellent ability to speak, read, and write in English to complete reports and communicate with clients. • Problem Solving: Ability to adapt to changing site conditions and keep the project on schedule. Physical Requirements • Manual Labour: Willingness to work alongside the crew performing physical tasks (lifting, digging) when required. • Weather Tolerance: Ability to lead and work outdoors in all Newfoundland weather conditions. • Physical ability to perform manual labour and lift heavy materials (50lbs) when required.
